Alistair Maclean has written about 30 books. "Force 10 from Navarone",
which is the follower to "The guns of Navarone", is one of Macleans best
known works among already mentioned "The guns of Navarone", "H.M.S. Ulysses",
"Where eagles dare", "Fear is the Key" and "Bear Island". Alistair Maclean
was born in 1922 in Scotland. His first novel "H.M.S. Ulysses", published
in 1956, was a documentary novel describing war at sea. "Force 10 from
Navarone" was published in 1968, 11 years after "The guns of Navarone".
Maclean died in 1987 as the uncrowned king of thrillers. Many of his novels
have also been filmed.
Mallory, Miller and Andrea, all men, have just arrived home from Navar-one when they are sent to another mission in Yugoslavia, where the plot mainly takes place. The main-character in this story is Mallory, also Miller and Andrea are mentioned a lot. These three men are working for the allied intelligence. The new mission that they get is in Neretva, which is a vital sector of the main north-south route through Yugoslavia. Miller, Mallory and Andrea take on parachutes and after some time in the air they land somewhere close to Neretva, nearby the Partisans headquarters. The mission that these three men are assigned to is very secret. It has such a high rank of confidentiality that they even keep it as a secret to their own alliance. South of the Neretva river is General Zimmermanns two armoured divisions. Those divisions are the Germans that very soon will invade Yugoslavia, which is very important to have control over. Due to that it mustnt be lost to the Germans. Mallory, who is the main-character, is very busy in this book. He talks with everybody and makes everything important himself. Miller seems a bit older and more irritated, which is shown from a humoristic point of view. Miller very often comes with sarcastic comments to what many people say, and he always tries to see things from the humoristic way. Andrea is quiet but very loyal, he is also brave and has a very strong will. I found this book very exiting, and Macleans way of expressing things is very good. I can recommend this book to everybody that likes excitement. |
