Björn Borg


Björn Borg is the most well known Swedish tennis-player ever. He was born in 1956 in Södertälje, a suburb of Stockholm.

Borg started to concentrate on his tennis at the age of 14 and within a year he was the world´s top ranked junior player. He won his first major title, the Italian Open in June 1974 when he was 18 years old. That same month he won his first "grand-slam" tournament - The French Open.

Borg was the youngest player ever to join the Swedish Davis-Cup team in 1975. That same year he led Sweden to its first Davis-Cup victory, and by then he had become a national hero in Sweden.

Borg dominated men´s professional tennis in late1970s and early 1980s. He totally won as many as 62 tournaments between 1974-81. Of those 62 is 11 titles "Grand slam tournaments". Borg held the men´s number one ranking for a num-ber of years, and in 1990 he was promoted to the "Tennis hall of fame".

Borg is the only player ever to win the Wimbledon 5 years in a row (1976-80).
He won the French Open 6 times (1974,1975,1978-81)
but he lost in the United States Open finals six times.

Borg developed the sport by being the first player to really show what hard training is all about, that combined with an extraordinary ball feeling allowed him to play a tennis that no one had ever seen before.

He ended his career in 1984. He then became a businessman in fashion and cosmetics. Borg tried to return to competitive tennis in early1990s but couldn´t reach his former level of play. In 1993 he joined the senior circuit, tournaments for players over 35.
